Register for SWANA    

 

The TN Sustainability Conference will offer the Solid Waste Association of North America’s (SWANA) training preparation course, Integrated Solid Waste Management. Testing is separate. 

Event Dates: August 18-20, 2025, at The Park Vista Hotel, Mountain View Room A, Gatlinburg, TN.

Classes are scheduled 8:00 a.m. EDT to 5:00 p.m. EST each day, with designated breaks and lunch on your own.

An online certification exam can be taken online on the national SWANA website at an additional cost. Limited scholarships are available for TRC members, and the class fee is $650 for those not receiving a scholarship.

 

Registration can be completed below for the scholarship, with testing fees incurred separately. Priority will be given to individuals with no prior certifications.

 

This training is designed for professionals in the recycling sector, covering essential topics such as program design, material quality standards, contract management, and outreach strategies.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the elements associated with designing and developing a sustainable recycling program

  • Determine acceptable material quality and requirements for existing and emerging markets

  • Apply quality requirements and regulatory standards of a “Buy Recycled” program

  • Identify program costs and revenues required to develop a funding

  • Establish and manage contracts for recycling services

  • Select the appropriate tools for recyclable collection

  • Plan an education and outreach program

Course Content
The course consists of lectures, class activities, and exercises. The text for the course, Managing Recycling Systems, is a comprehensive manual that details the following topics with supplemental images, graphs, examples, and exercises. It serves as a must-have on-the-job reference tool.

  • Planning a Recycling Program

  • Funding a Recycling Program

  • Developing and Researching Recycling Markets

  • Collection and Processing of Recyclable Materials

  • Planning an Education and Outreach Program

  • Establishing and Managing Contracts for Recycling

  • Applying End-User Standards and Quality Requirements for Recycled Products

  • Managing Recycling Programs to Protect Human Health and the Environment
